Peru: Police free foreign hostages
Cuzco, Peru, Sep. 29 (UPI) -- Peruvian police stormed an Inca temple freeing a group of tourists being held by irate coca growers in protest, La Republica newspaper reported Wednesday.
Authorities used tear gas to smoke out the hostage takers from the temple in the tourist city of Cuzco, a popular starting point for the world-famous Inca Trail. The tourists were unharmed during the one-hour siege.
Local reports said it was the first time that coca growers took hostages in protest of the U.S.-backed and funded coca eradication program being implemented by the Peruvian government.
Peru is the world's second largest produced of cocaine behind neighboring Colombia.
