i am planning on going to peru in august, can you tell me anything about altitude sickness, apparently some people die of it, very scary really... i mean, how bad is it over there ?

Nathalie , better is to be acclimated with altitude.
Once you get to Cuzco for example , the first day you have to live slowly , to walk slowly and take deep breathes.
It depends on people and their physiology but we could say that 3 days at least are necessary to be acclimated with high altitude.
IF you have headaches or other sickness , take medicine and particulary Diamox .
Sorochi pills are also selled by local drugstores.
Ask for "medicina contra el malo de altura " in spanish .
